The Rose and Crown is a beloved gathering place for residents and visitors alike, with seasonal menus, local events, and a commitment to exceptional dining experiences.
We are delighted to announce that The Rose and Crown is now under new ownership, led by husband-and-wife team Amelia and Malachai Moore. With our combined experience in hospitality and the culinary arts, we are passionate about breathing new life into this historic pub and making it a welcoming hub for both locals and visitors.
Our vision is to create a warm, inviting atmosphere where guests can enjoy classic pub dishes with a gourmet twist. Using fresh, locally sourced ingredients, we are dedicated to providing exceptional dining experiences. Alongside seasonal menus that showcase the best of Dorset’s produce, we plan to host a range of local events to celebrate and engage with the community.
The local community has already shown tremendous support, and we are excited to continue building on the pub’s legacy. Whether you’re a regular or visiting for the first time, we invite you to experience The Rose and Crown’s unique blend of traditional charm and modern culinary excellence.
Nestled in the verdant parish of Trent, a village rich in history and folklore, The Rose & Crown is a true Dorset gem.
Originally built in the 14th century to house the builders of Saint Andrew’s Church spire, this historic pub retains its authentic charm with original features such as its thatched roof, flagstone floors, and large fireplaces. Steeped in centuries of heritage, it is set amidst the picturesque landscape of the Ernest Cook Trust estate, providing stunning views in every direction.
Over the years, The Rose & Crown has witnessed many historic events and legends. It sits near Trent Manor House, where King Charles II sought refuge in a priest hole after his defeat at the Battle of Worcester. With its deep connections to the escape of King Charles II and the steadfast loyalty of Colonel Wyndham and his daughter Jane Lane, the pub is intricately tied to this storied period.
The surrounding countryside also holds secrets, from the haunting tales of the bottomless pit at Trent Barrow, believed to be the final resting place of Arthurian legend’s Excalibur, to ghost stories of a sunken coach and horses.
More recently, the pub was brought into its prime by the legendary landlord “Buff Biggins,” whose presence and stories still echo through its walls. Today, visitors can enjoy a pint in Buff’s Bar, a space dedicated to his memory, while soaking in the rich tapestry of history that makes The Rose & Crown truly unique. With a perfect blend of rustic heritage, modern comforts, and local charm, the pub offers an authentic experience that celebrates both its past and its vibrant role in the community today.
